Maymay Weaves a Story*

As long as she could remember, Maymay had lived in the first floor of a two-storey house with her eight siblings. Her family fondly called her Baye from Amay Baye or Little Girl. But oftentimes, she would prefer to use Maymay a nickname that came from her real name, Teresa May.

One day, when Baye was still a little girl, her Papa asked her what she wanted to be when she grows up. Her Papa had actually wanted his little girl to grow up to be like him. But Baye answered, I just want to read and write. Baye did not want to spend her time with calculators, worksheets and even columnar books of her Papa’s clients.

Being the obedient little girl that she was, neither could Baye force herself to want these things her Papa wanted her to be when she grew up. What she had always loved was the company of books, her colored writing pens and her diary.

As Baye grew up, she found out that she was not always enthusiastic about writing. Now called Maymay in school, she had turned against writing in Grade I. She wanted to write better and improve her penmanship. She was in fact excited to learn. But her teacher had favorite pupils in class; and they were daughters of the other teachers in her school. Thus, her teacher scolded the pupils who were not her favorite. And Maymay was one of those pupils.

Then, she had not written as excitedly as before.

The summer before Maymay turned college her Papa asked again what course she wanted to take. But Maymay answered, I want to read more stories and maybe I can try to write again. Maymay did not want to spend her time with calculators, worksheets and even columnar books of her Papa’s clients.

Now Maymay is in her junior year in college. She rents a boarding house near her school. And she only goes home to the house she shares with her eight siblings on summer vacations and Christmas breaks. And in both houses, she has read many stories she has not read before. She has loved writing again, too.
